Lineman Trainee/Apprentice Lineman
Job Description
Summary of Duties:
An entry-level position that may serve as an apprentice to a lineman in constructing, replacing, and maintaining electric distribution and transmission lines, structures, and equipment. All services must be performed in a prompt and courteous manner to promote safety, goodwill, and efficiency of operation to members and the general public.
Specific Duties:
- Assist in line maintenance, line operations and line construction.
- Perform ground duties as necessary to supply linemen with equipment and materials to work for pole-top assemblies.
- Operate bucket, digger, pole trucks, air compressor, and air hammer.
- Read and install meters as necessary.
- Read and compile material for jobs from materials sheets.
- Make meter loops.
- Install breaker boxes below the meter.
- Assist in delinquent account collections as necessary.
- Work standby duty/emergency maintenance, as necessary, to repair outages occurring outside regularly scheduled working hours.
- Understand and practice all safety rules and regulations as taught by the state safety and job training instructor as written in the approved safety manual. Attend and participate in safety meetings.
- Responsible for maintaining and safely operating all equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles.
- Prepare and submit reports and forms as required.
- Use knowledge of REA specifications, National Electric Code, city ordinances, and codes pertaining to distribution line design and installation.
Other Duties:
- If elected, may serve on the Employee Action Committee to enhance employee-management relations and develop cooperative policies.
- Attend and assist with annual membership meetings. Assist with preparation when needed.
- Attend school/seminars/training programs as necessary.

- Visit with members to promote goodwill, inform them of member services and marketing programs, and/or refer them to another cooperative employee who can supply more detailed information.

None.
Supervision Received
Receives close supervision from journeyman lineman, construction foreman, or serviceman.
Education Requirements
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Required Skills
Must be capable of reading distribution system maps and have a thorough knowledge of the distribution systems, such as the location of lines, voltages, sources of power, the direction of feeds, the relative importance of one line to another, and the location of OCRs, etc.
Must understand the purpose of all tools used in line work, including all hot line tools, hand line, associated equipment use, and the core of all ropes and climbing equipment.
Must become familiar with basic REA construction specifications, National Electric Code standards, and other applicable standards pertaining to distribution systems and operations.
Must develop a thorough knowledge of all policies relating to member assistance and collections.
Must pass Class B commercial drivers’ licensing requirements.
Physical Requirements
Must be capable of operating a motor vehicle, physically fit to climb distribution poles, and of a physical stature to lift and carry objects weighing up to, but not limited to, 75 pounds.
Working Conditions
May operate from headquarters or a branch office as assigned. Shall be functional under occupational stress, including frequent long nights in inclement weather, capable of working from the field or office, capable of communicating with the public, and aware that a clock or a calendar does not determine the working day.
Safety Sensitive
This is a safety-sensitive position. A safety-sensitive job includes tasks or duties that the cooperative reasonably believes could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task or others. Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this job, a constant state of mental alertness is required, and no substance (including, but not limited to, medical marijuana) may be used by the employee in this position which may impair the employee's ability to maintain said constant state of mental alertness.
